Abortion/Bleeding after surgical abortion

Question
QUESTION: I had a surgical abortion 6 weeks ago and have been bleeding every single day since.  The bleeding has gotten less and less as time goes by, but it is still there.  On and off since the abortion I have been cramping by my left ovary.  Which I would normally assume is ovulatory pain, however it does happen on and off every week since the abortion. Should I be concerned?

ANSWER: Hi Cindy,
I would recommend you follow up with the facility that did the abortion.  Unless you are on depoprovera (birth control injection) you shouldn't be bleeding daily for 6 weeks.  The cramping should also be evaluated.  Sorry you are having difficulties.

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: Thanks Joan!
I have had 2 followup appointments at the same facility and they have advised me that I am 100% healthy except for the bleeding/cramping.  But they don't have an answer as to why.  I am going to get a second opinion. I am concerned for my health

Answer
Cindy,
I agree that it would be a good idea to get a second opinion.  Usually bleeding for more than 3 weeks is retained products.  The treatment is usually a repeat procedure.  I don't know where you live, but you may want to look at my website: earlyabortion.com to see if there is a private doctor near you who can evaluate you.  I hope this is helpful,
Doctor Joan
