Question
QUESTION: Hi Doctor Joan,

I had a medical AB August 31st, I was 5 weeks, I still havent gotten a period yet?.. Is this normal?.. Last week I had really strong cramps that lasted off and on for two days, but nothing still. Any suggestions?

ANSWER: Jeannine,
This sounds completely normal.  You should check a pregnancy test.  If it is negative, there is nothing to be concerned about, and it should come in the next few weeks.
Periods can be somewhat irregular after ending a pregnancy.

QUESTION: Thanks Dr. Joan, I did take a test last friday and it was negative. I will continue to wait for my period, I was just a little concerned because Ive been having increased vaginal discharge, no odor or irritation, just white kind of creamy/milky consistency.

ANSWER: Jeannine,
That's great!  There shouldn't be any relationship between having a discharge and not getting your period.  If there is an abundant, odorless discharge, you might want to get it checked. It is most likely normal, but could be trichomonas, which is  best treated.  It is a silent harmless infection that often "comes out" in pregnancy.

QUESTION: Thanks Dr. Joan, One last question, do you think if i begin my BC pills will that bring the onset of my period?

Answer
Jeannine,
I wouldn't advise it at this point as at will confuse things.  If you start on birth control pills it will be another month until you bleed. I would wait to see what happens.  If you don't get your period in another month, I would then work with a doctor.  They would likely prescribe pills different from birth control pills to evaluate the situation.
