Abortion/after abortion birth control

Question
I had an abortion on 10/05/2007. I stared my birth control patch 2 days later on Sunday. My boyfriend and I had sex on 10/31 when the condom "burst". That was not a week my patch was on but I was not on my period, just light spotting after the intercourse. My question is now on Dec. 19 I feel pregnant again. Just a bit sick on my stomach not the whole headache and tender breast. Is there a high possibility I am pregnant again? I have done some research and found that it could be side effects of the patch or just my body still trying to heal from the procedure. I am so nervous and confused. Please help! Thank you for your time.

Answer
Dear Keta,
If you started the patch within days of the procedure and took it as you were supposed to, changing it weekly for three weeks, then taking it off one week to get your period, you should have no concerns.  It is ok to have sex the week you are off the patch - you are protected against pregnancy.  You may want to check a home pregnancy test, just to reassure yourself.
I hope this is helpful,
Doctor Joan
