I am a 23 yr old mother. I currently work with a group called safe haven. My position there is as a mother`s adovacate, I support the choices that the women who come to us make, and help them carry out their decision, be it adoption, abortion or keeping the baby. I know that there are not a lot of people that a young woman can turn to for help on this issue and get an unbiast and truthful answer... THAT is what I do. I give honest, factual, and unbiast answers about abortion.

Question
Hi my name is sadi and im 18 years old. Me and my boyfriend got pregnant and my mother forced me to have an abortion 2 weeks ago. I am going for my follow up appointment on wensday. The doctor told me to wait 2 weeks before engageing in sexual course and i was wondering what the chances of me getting pregnant would be if i had un protected sex during this weekend.Me and my boy friend are both HIV negative an di know this because we have both gotten tested. Im asking becasue i plan on going on birth control pills as soon as i go to the doctor on wensday and i know that if by any chance i got pregnant this weekend and i started on birth control my child would have problems. Please answer me truthfully thankyou very much.

Answer
Sadi,

It is hard to say. It is very much in debate medicaly as to how long it takes a woman's body to recover after an abortion or miscarriage.
I can tell you personaly, that after my last miscarriage (which it would be the same had it been an abortion) i got pregnant within 18 days of completing the miscarriage.

There used to be some thought that it took a woman up to 6 weeks to be able to get pregnant again after an abortion/miscarriage, but within the last 4-5 years that is not the common thought anymore.

If i were you, i would not chance it. Especialy if you do not want to be pregnant...

Also keep in mind that the GYN told you to wait not only for asthetic reasons but becuase your body really does need time to heal. Your cervix was streched, and your body went thru (although be it minimal truama) truama.  You really ought to wait, so that you dont have any future complications later on when you decide you are ready to have kids..... I know that isnt what you want to hear... But medicaly speaking you should wait.
