About Maria
Expertise
I can address emotional issues regarding abortion and what to expect when undergoing the procedure. Also if the partner has left I can provide advice and support to alleviate the sense of abandonment.

Experience
I underwent an abortion in 1995 when I was 19. My Partner left so I have first hand experience in these two areas.

Publications
I have contributed in a book called 'Giving Sorrow Words' by Melinda Tankard Reist which documents Women's accounts of abortion. I spoke of my experience on radio to help promote the book.

Abortion - birth control pill after abortion

Expert: Maria - 6/8/2002

Question
Hi I'm 23
I had an abortion in May. Soon after I started birth control pills. I finished the last pill of the pack today, and the last two days I have had really bad depression and anxiety. I don't know if this has anything to do with feeling bad about the abortion or if it's the hormones from the Pill. When I was feeling really depressed, I wasn't feeling sad about the abortion, it was more of a feeling like I just wanted to get through the day so I could go to bed, sleep, and hopefully wake up all better. I don't know if I should seek another form of birth control. What is your opinion?

Answer
Dear Shannon

Medication or lack of it can cause a myriad of symptoms in us including the emotional kind. I am by no means a Doctor but I am guessing that the medication could have something to do with the way you feel but also at the same time the abortion could be playing on your mind. I would suggest visiting your Doctor and if your Depression and Anxiety isn't related to your medication then get referred to a good Psychiatrist. I still see mine every fortnight to discuss my problems. I highly recommend it if you feel you cannot function. I hope I have helped in some way. If you need any support email me at mc_rubycharlie@hotmail.com

All the Best
Maria
