Question
Hi i am 34yrs old.   I had a termination done on sept. 26.  On oct 4 i had sex with my partner.  We did not use any protection.  But he we did practice the withdrawal method.  How long after a termination can you actually become pregnant.

Answer
Deirdre,
You're probably safe because it was only one week and he withdrew.  However, it is possible that you can get pregnant right away.
If you check a pregnancy test now, it will still be positive from the prior pregnancy (the hormones take weeks to go away).  I would still advise you get a home pregnancy test - get one with 2 tests.  Take one now - it should be lightly positive.  Take another one in one week.  It should be lighter or faint positive.  If it is darker, you have some reason to be concerned.
It sounds like it would be a good time to get on a better method of birth control.  You can go back to where you had the termination, or you can go to any family doctor, or to Planned Parenthood for help with this.
Best of luck,
Doctor Joan
