Question
Hi Danielle. It's me again, Tricia. It told me that I had asked too many follow-ups, and had to ask a new question. So here I am! LOL

I was wondering, do you actually have any statistics about how many women suffer serious health related problems or die from childbirth? I ask because my sister said that it is very rare for women to die from childbirth nowadays, and I was just wondering how true that was. I know that diabetic women in particular are at a very high risk for suffering complications. And serious ones too. Like blindness. How awful! How awful that these people seem to care NOTHING about the woman, or how much pain she suffers.

My sister said I was not compassionate, but I don't feel that they are very compassionate. They could care less what happens to the woman.

Also, I was just wondering whether you think that abortion will remain legal in the US? I must say that I am quite concerned. I think if Obama or Rodham-Clinton are elected, we will be okay. But we are in trouble if we get another Republican. I believe its like 5-4 now on the Supreme Court, and the next President will have the opportunity to elect someone to the Supreme Court. If it is an anti-chocie person women may very well lose their right to choose. That scares me SO much.

I just can't imagine being forced to give birth against my will. It would be awful! And what are they going to do? Throw women in jail for having abortions? The thought makes me feel physically ill.

Looking forward to hearing back from you. I am really enjoying our conversation.

Tricia

Answer
Hey! ah, I hate when it does that!

Do you want statistics for just the US, or worldwide? Worldwide, 529,000 die a year. And 20 million suffer injuries, infection or disease. For the US, 13 in 100,000 die. The infant death rate in the US is 679 per 100,000. In 2003, it was 12 in 100,000 for women, so there is a rise, and this is not good.
Yep, for them it's all about the fetus. Not the woman, and not the baby.

I don't see any compassion coming from people who want to dictate what a woman should and should not do with her own anatomy. That's just ignorance and misogyny, plain and simple.

I'm concerned about this as well. And the Supreme Court is exactly the reason why. You're right, I think if Obama or Hillary gets elected, they will nominate pro-choice judges, or atleast I hope so. If McCain gets elected though, oh god. He's extremely anti woman. He wants hormonal birth control illegalized and abortion as well. However, my father pointed out to me if we get a Democrat majority in Congress, they'll be able to override his nominations. But that's not a given. I do think it will remain legal, but states keep putting more and more restrictions, which makes it more and more unsafe. I hope that with all the hardwork Planned Parenthood and NARAL are doing, we won't let that happen. However, when (I think it was South Dakota?) proposed an abortion law that would outlaw it except for rape or incest (I think), activists got out, got over 32,000 signatures (they only needed a little over 16,000) and got it on the ballot that November to be voted on, and the voters turned it down. SO I think there is hope.

Yeah, whenever I think about times when abortion was illegal, and no reliable birth control, it freaks me out! How did women manage it?! I just can't even imagine being in that horrible position, having no control over my body. And yes, some states have proposed laws where if a woman travels to another state to get an abortion, she will be arrested, and anyone going with her would be an "accomplice." It's absolutely ridiculous. Forced birth is just wrong, and completely unacceptable.

I'm enjoying our conversation too! :)
