Education/Credentials I have a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology and Biology, and am halfway through a Master's Degree, also in Biology. I have access to and read many of the top medical journals, from which I also get the best, most thorough and accurate to answers to pressing medical and health related questions. This equips me with factual, biological information to dispel many myths related to abortion.

Question Hi. My name is Eliza and I'm a high school student. I wanted to ask a question about something that was taught in my sex education class. It ties into abortion. The teacher was obviously very anti-abortion, and called it a "selfish act". She went on and on about how girls want to sleep around but don't want to take responsibility for their actions, and that abortion is the "easy way out". I am sexually active and I have had an abortion, and I found this offensive. I didn't feel it was the "easy way out" at all. It was a tough decision for me to make, and I agonized over it. But my boyfriend and I ultimately decided that it was for the best. We both want to go to college. She also said that girls should not say yes to sex, because boys will only use you and then move onto the next girl. That boys don't respect girls that "put out" and think they are "cheap" and "easy. They are not the kind of girl he wants to marry. She used this saying that I found very offensive. "Why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free". Basically, why should a guy marry a woman when he already got in her pants. She says boys don't want to marry girls who are not virgins, and they certainly don't want to marry girls who have had abortions because it is "unnatural" and he will wonder whether she would be a loving mother and wife. This seems very sexist to me, as she only addressed these comments to the girls. Also, I feel that she should have presented both sides of the issue. Not everyone feels abortion is wrong. And what of the girls who have had abortions? She didn't show any regard for their feelings. She made me feel guilty and ashamed not only for having sex, but also for having an abortion. Do you have any thoughts on this? Its really bothering me and I have no one to talk to, because nobody knows about my abortion except my boyfriend and I, and it's a sensitive issue for him. Also, do you think it's true that a guy will look down on a girl and not want to marry her because she had sex and or an abortion? Thanks.
Eliza
Answer Dear Eliza,
I am shocked and horrified that this teacher said any of those things. Believe me, you were not the only girl in that classroom who is sexually active and who has had an abortion. You would be shocked to hear just how many women have abortions. By the time women are 45, HALF of them will have had at least one abortion.
I think having a baby when you are a teen is incredibly selfish. I had an abortion when I was in college, and most of my friends had abortions in high school and college, and after. You aren't alone AT ALL.
Is there a way you could write to Ms. Magazine and tell them what happened?
