Question
Hi there. My question is how do you respond to the argument that if a woman has a right to an abortion based on the premise that it is her body and she can do what she wants with it, why is it illegal for women to do drugs or prostitute themselves? Shouldn't the latter be allowed as well?

For the record I am pro-choice as well, but abortion foes will often use that argument, and I'm not sure how to respond. Thanks.

Answer
Hi Leigh :)

Well, people ARE fighting to make those things legal. However, both can cause quite serious damage to the woman, where as a legal abortion will rarely cause harm. With abortion, bodily integrity trumps the right to life, as the new life cannot force or takeover the woman's body just so it can survive. Like how just because you're dying and need a liver transplant, you wouldn't be able to force someone to give up theirs just so you could live.

Illegal prostitution (it's legal in Nevada, and when legal, much better for the woman) can cause the spread of deadly diseases, violence towards the women, and the prostitution of young girls and forced prostitution. Only 1% of women say they felt "forced" to have the abortion.

I personally feel people should be able to use drugs as long as they don't harm another person, and it would be better if prostitution were legal, because blood tests are routinely done and the men are tracked, so any guy who harms a woman will be caught. Now though, illegal drugs and prostitution will likely cause more harm than good, where as an abortion is unlikely to cause harm to the woman's body.

Did that help? Let me know if didn't.
