Abusive Relationships - Jealous/Insecure Boyfriend

Expert: Azure - 8/12/2007

Question
I've been dating this guy for over nine months now, and I am very much in love with him. We're only in college, but we're able to talk about the future and plans together. Things are great, but he gets fairly jealous and insecure sometimes. I have this good guy friend that I used to be really close with. We're still friends, but every time I mention this friend or hang out with him, my boyfriend gets mad and upset. I love my boyfriend, and I can somewhat appreciate where he's coming from, but I'm tired of feeling guilty for seeing this friend of mine. What should I do?

Answer
why do you "appreciate" disrespect, anger, controlling  behavior??..this will only get worse; unless you want to accept the guilt trip he's giving you and live with it, the only option is to INFORM him that his immature reaction is no longer acceptable, that each person here is free to choose their own friends and spend time with them, free from negative comment, or worse, and that he needs to respect your wishes in order for the relationship to continue...if he truly and unselfishly cares about you, he'll figure out a way to get himself under control...no need to accept less...
