As far is Acadia is concerned, I know a fair amount generally, and am particularly familiar with the carriage paths and mountain biking on them.

Question
when is the best time to come to acadia and are there any speicals things or events to see and how far from new york city is it and all so recommend a place to stay that is not to expesnive

Answer
Leonard:

When?  I'd recommend Summer-Fall (mid-June - October).  Earlier, you'll get bugs and cold, later, the leaves are gone and its cold again.  The only downside during July/August are the crowds.  Personally, I'd either go the last two weeks in June or in September.  The leaves usually turn in early October.

Special things?  Tons!  Hiking, mountainbiking, sea kayaking, whalewatching, nature tours, arts & crafts, high-speed ferry to Nova Scotia, windjammer cruises, lovely scenery for sightseeing, lobsters, etc.

How far?  Distance: Mapquest says 493 miles, and I agree with their estimate of 9 1/2 hours.

Where to stay?  I have no specific recommendations, although there are now approx. 100 B&Bs on or near Acadia and some 20 hotels.  I don't know what you mean by "expensive".  By New York City standards, even Bar Harbor in the summer will be reasonable.  Its possible to get a hotel for under $100/night, the same with B&B.

Here is a web site I recommend as a starting place:

Good luck!
