Subject: Unemployment reporting

Question
Shirley,
I live in TX where we don't have state taxes.  I didn't have any regular wages with my prior company last year but did get unemployment from them.  They sent me a W-2 for $8656.53 and show $2337.26 in box 2 (Fed Inc tax w/held).

My unemployment total granted was for $9464 and that is what shows on my 1099-G from the Texas Workforce Commission (along with a voluntary 10% taken out and put to fed taxes for $936).
Why doesn't my employer amount match my unemployment amount?

Answer
The employer will not send you a W-2 for your unemployment amount as that is handled by the Texas Workforce commission on the 1099-G.

The company is saying that you earned 8656.53 and that they withheld 2337.26 in taxes.

If they are trying to put the unemployment on it is wrong they do not do it.

You will need to check with the company and find out why you were sent a W-2 at all.

Shirley
