QuestionHi my name is Chip and I am just finishing my first year in junior college in Mississippi. I am planning on taking a rigorous accounting schedule next year and receiving my associates degree in accounting. I was wanting to start working as soon as possible after receiving that degree. I wanted to start making at least $35,000 starting off and work my way to a higher paying accountant. Is that possible? What kind of jobs could I get with an associates degree in accounting? What kind of salary would I be looking at and what kind of promotion or raise opportunities could I be looking at? Thank you so much for your time!!
AnswerI have been removed from the accounting job world for quite a while. Accordingly I have no idea what the current job market is, not to mention what the salaries run. In addition, given the current recession salaries may likely be lower than they were several years ago.
I have no idea who is hiring. If you expect to get certified, you will need to work for a larger CPA firm who can provide the accounting, tax and audit experience you need, depending on the CPA license requirements of your state.
Do not start too low, if you can afford to. Bookkeepers are getting maybe $10 per hour which is something you can do, but should not. Start out, if you can, working for a CPA firm.
In addition, to all I have said, I presume an associates degree is a two year degree -- I am not sure what it worth, probably less than a 4 year degree.
I am not sure my ramblings have helped you much; consider asking someone who is a CPA on AllExperts.
