Accounting, Payroll & Pension Issues - Father's death and pension question

Expert: Allen - 7/2/2009

Question
My father and mother divorced in 1989.  He retired in 1993 with a pension.  He lived with a woman whom he married in 2008.  He died a month ago.  There is no mention of the pension in the will.  Who should the funds go to?

Answer
The payment would be governed by the Beneficiary Designation on file with the Plan Administrator.

If there is no designation, the payment would be made based on the terms of the plan document. In most cases this would be his current wife.

Check with the plan administrator.
