Accounting, Payroll & Pension Issues/401b plan

Question
I worked for a non-profit for four years about 18 years ago and had a 401b account.  I do not have any paperwork and do not know if I have any money in an account somewhere.  How can I find out?

Answer
Some thoughts:
1. The money is most likely invested at an insurance company or a mutual fund company. Check for any old statements and call the company that invests the money.
2. Call your former employer and see if they can give you the name of the insurance or mutual fund company. Make certain the investment company has your current address.
3. Contact the local office of the U.S. Dept. of Labor - Employee Benefits Security Administration. They may be able to help you.

Good luck.

One minor point - The plan is a 403(b) plan not a 401(b) plan. Knowing this will be helpful when you discuss with outside parties.
