Question
Allen, I worked for L.S.Ayres and Stewart's Dry Goods in Louisville, KY from June 1972 to August 1984.  These stores became part of Federated Dept Stores and ultimately Macy's.  How can I find out if I'm entitled to a small pension based on this employment record?  Thanks for your consideration in this matter.

Answer
Unfortunately, there is no sure method to get this information.

You can try contacting the human resources department at Macy's. However, this will probably end up being a major time killer. Nevertheless, if you have the time, try it.

There is one possible solution. If your former employer did things correctly, they would have notified the Social Security Administration when you terminated employment with a vested pension. If this was done, when you apply for Social Security benefits, the government will tell you about your pension. It will still be up to you to pursue the company. However, you will then have something to use in your calls and letters.

Good luck.
