Accounting, Payroll & Pension Issues/Vested benefits

I worked for the phone company in 1968 to 1986. They closed the company and we were told we were vested. I was recently laid off from another company I am 63. I tried to contact the phone company to inquire about the pension, but i never can get a good phone number or web site. Can you help me? Thank You

When a company goes bankrupt the pension is protected by the Government. I am not sure whether you had a defined benefit plan (like a tradition pension, think of social security) or a defined contribution plan (like a 401(k) plan). Either way the pension is protected in cases of bankruptcy, although the benefits may have been decreased.

The best place to look is at the Department of Labor website. You can look up defunct plans and see information about abandoned pension plans.

I would try this website first and see if you can find any information.

You also may want to contact the Pension Benefit Guarantee Corporation, as they may be able to assist you further. This is the company that ensures pension plans in the United States, kind of like the FDIC protects bank accounts.

If there are any other ways I can be of assistance, please let me know.
