Accounting, Payroll & Pension Issues/Lucent Savings Plan and Retirement Income Plan difference

Question
Hi Ed,

I worked at Lucent until 1999. I have a 401K with Lucent managed by Fidelity that is called the 'Lucent Savings Plan'. Lucent also sends me mailings about a 'Lucent Retirement income Plan'. Are these 2 names for the same account? I have tried contacting Lucent but the beaurocracy is slow, automated and confusing.
Thanks for your comments.

Answer
Probably not, the 401k plan is a defined contribution plan. The other one is for a defined benefit plan, some sort of pension.

One easy way to tell is the Taxpayer or Employer Identification Number (TIN or EIN) that would be on each statement. If they are the same the number will be the same on both.
