Answer
Lindsay,

The way you determine what kind of front you are dealing with is the wind direction on the COLD side of the frontal boundary. If the cold air is advancing, it is a cold front. If the cold air is retreating, it is a warm front. If winds on the cold side of the front are almost calm, or are blowing parallel to the front, then it is a stationary front.
Warm fronts are usually associated with stratus clouds, while cold fronts are more often associated with cumulus and sometimes cumulonimbus clouds.

I hope this helped.

Sincerely,
