Subject: 1962 12 STRING TAKAMINE

Question
Hi,
Hope you can help me out. My husband has a Takamine 12 string that he bought 40+ years ago he says its a 1962 is he looking at the right info? what should he be looking at to make sure we have the correct answers because he has been told it is valuable and should get it insured.

Answer
well, I get allot of questions about 1962 Takamine's.. Because they all say EST 1962 on them.. But the actual date of manufacture is easy to determine by the serial number, It breaks down like this YYMMDDXX  So the first two are the year, the second two are the month and the third set of two are the day.. The last 2 to 3 numbers(Some had 9 digit serial numbers) are the number off the line. SO in the case of 881113354 it is made in 1988,November 13th, and was the 354th one to be made. I would be interested in knowing what the serial number is, so I can get you more information about it. But, I haven't actually seen any Takamine's that were worth too much. They are decent guitars, but not exactly a collectible brand. I have seen some of the older ones from the mid/late 60's and early 70's sell for around $1100 but that is in extremely good condition, and even then, I have also seen some sell for less than $900 in the same condition.. So, it's not something that is going to be worth a major amount of money, Even 60's Gibsons are selling for $600-$800.. And they are much more in the collectible catalog.. I myself am a player, not a collector.. But I can't keep from buying more.. So, I guess in that aspect I collect them, but because I want more, not because I want special models or years.. But I must say Takamine has been consistent with decent quality and materials.. So, it should be a great player...  Hope this helps, and please let me know what the year is.. Thanks...  :o)
