About D. Hughes
Expertise Alvarez/Alvarez Yairi, K. Yairi, S. Yairi, and Yairi and Son. There are also a few export models, Wilson and Samick by S. Yairi.
NOTE: Due to very limited info available on K. Yairi, S. Yairi, and Yairi and Son models, without photo's I won't be able to do the research necessary to try and find the answers you want. Even then, we are talking about 50+ Years of guitar manufacturing, with hundreds of different models. A lot of which were exported to other countries, where info is even harder to find, so, I can't guarantee that I will be able to pinpoint your EXACT model! I will do my best to gather as much info, and answer your questions.
PLEASE, if you have questions in regards to OTHER BRANDS, use the Guitar-General catagory, as I won't be able to help you.

Expert: D. Hughes - 11/6/2009
Question I have an Alvarez, Kazuo Yairi, Model DY54, year 1983, serial number 48968 that belonged to my Dad. I would like to know the value if possible and any further information concerning the guitar.
Thanks so much for your help. Judy
Answer Hello Judy,
There were two DY54 models, but if yours is 1983 then it would be the Alvarez Yairi Silver Fawn, from their Silver Maple Series. The top is Solid Canadian Spruce, Ebony fingerboard and bridge, maple binding on the top and back edges, and nato mahogany neck. The saddle and nut were bone. The back and sides are Ovangkol laminates.
Snowflake inlays on fingerboard, and a small rosewood inlay was at the lower bout (top). Intricate turquoise and wood marguetry inlay rosette. Chrome enclosed tuners.
The Silver Maple series had optional wood pickguards, but did not come with one installed.
MSRP in 1983 $495. First released in 1981.
Acoustic Bluebook values:
Excellent Average
$550 - 650 $300 - 350
Regards,
D.Hughes
