Acoustic Guitars/Alvarez 5078 Laser Cut

I have a 1983, Alvarez 5078 thin line laser cut guitar. I bought it around 1984.  Maybe 10-12 years ago, I gave it to my son, and he practiced on it some, but I knew that he doesn't play now, so I got it back from him.  When I gave it to him, it was in perfect condition.  When I got it back the other day, I was diappointed in its condition.  I feel that I now have to get the top refinished.

I had never known what kind of guitar is was until a few days ago, and now I would like to know more info about this guitar but I can't find much about it.  I send Alvarez an email several days ago and have not had a response.

Can you point me in to some sights that might have info?

Also: will a quality refinishing of the top diminish the value of the guitar, and how can I finid out the value of this guitar?

Hi. I hope this helps steer you towards learning more about your Alvarez. Yes, refinishing does negatively effect the value of a guitar, however, if you wish to do it for your own satisfaction, then by all means proceeed. D. Hughes was the go to guy for Alvarez here for years but I haven't seen much of him lately, don't know what is up there. See the allexperts link below to read one of his responses to a Alvarez 5078 thin line laser cut guitar query. I do answer some Alvarez questions but I am a Sigma by Martin expert per se but also deal and write about other Asian import guitars.  To find out more info including the value of your 5078 I would try these links:

Hope this helps. Cheers, Kevin

I am a scholar and researcher of vintage Asain Import guitars and my area of expertise is Sigma by Martin fretted instruments imported by C.F. Martin & Co. from 1970-2007. I have been compiling materials and studying Sigma since 2008.

I have my own website,, a blog, Sigma Martin Memo's, I am a consultant on the Vintage Sigma Guitars Facebook page and am an editor of the Sigma Guitars Wikipedia page. I am also writing a book on the sigma line and have just returned from MArtin in NAzareth where I was granted access to and permisiion to reproduce Sigma by MArtin materials by Dick Boak, Archivist at Martin.
