Question Greetings, I have a small guitar, I am thinking is 1940 or before. See if you can help with any info.
The label says " SUPERTONE" there is also these numbers stamped inside: S-40 in red letters circled, 200, 748 in black letters. It say "THE PREP" on the headstock. It has a painted on pickguard with a music clef, also has some type of design painted on the fretboard, painted rosette and body binding. I'm not sure about the wood, but the body and top are all the same, a light brown color. It has a V-shape neck painted dark brown. Seems to be all original, in very good condition, with only a few very light scratches. Thanks, dg
Answer
It was made in Summer of 1940, you answered this one yourself, with the S-40 The supertone is a Harmony guitar, and Harmony used that method of date stamping their guitars.. They painted on pickgaurd because World war II was going on, and the government needed all the plastic, metal, and such they could get. I have a Stella Parlor guitar that is very similar to this. It was made at the same time.. Yours is the Standard version of the Singing Cowboy guitar. Supertone made a 236 model that was a 3/4 version that also had cowboys painted on the front..Yours is the full sized adult guitar..
