Question My son is 2 1/2 he has been hospitalized twice with severe ataxia. MRI w/o contrast was done that was fine. Spinal tap was done neg. No fluid in ears . F/u with ent he has fluid. Hearing test was poor. Put in tubes still hearing 30dsbls bilaterly . He also has facial weakness and low tone in his jaw. sometimes his tonuge sticks out .could it be possible that he has an acoustic neoroma ? The ent has a Abr with sedation scheduled. He is a twin and was also a preemie.
Answer Given the bilateral (symmetric) nature of your son's symptoms, and his age, it is extremely unlikely that he has an Acoustic Neuroma. But to diagnose his condition, it would be much better to be seeing a neurologist rather than an ENT. And you should also make sure that your scans such as MRI are being read by a neuroradiologist rather than a regular radiologist.
