Topic: Acoustic Neuroma

Expert: Dina Q Goldin, Ph.D.
Date: 2/5/2007
Subject: gradual loss of feeling in one ear

Question
Several years ago I was diagnosed with Meniere's.  So I've got a gradual low-frequency hearing loss.  I have a sense of fullness in the affected ear.  I've had only one severe episode of vertigo.  For a while I was dizzy most of the time.  Then I got a pulsatile tinnitis in the affected ear.  My ear canal is usually dry and flaky.  And lately I've noticed that I'm losing feeling in the ear itself.  If I go back to my ENT he'll blame it on Meniere's.  BTW, my family has a chromosome 22 abnormality.

Answer
Hi Jennifer,

I encourage you to see a neurologist rather than an ENT, since this problem involves the nerves in your head, where the ENTs are not as qualified. I hope that the neurologist will refer you to have an MRI, so they can determine whether all your symptoms are caused by Meniere's or if something else is involved.
