Acting in Plays, Singing/Broadway Spectacular
Expert: Amandalynne - 1/12/2008
QuestionQUESTION: Hi. I'm a 16-year-old alto, and my school is doing this thing called "Broadway Spectacular" where people sing songs that have been in Broadway musicals. My breaking point is around A or Bb, and I need a female solo to sing, soon. Musicals I'm familiar with include Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella, South Pacific, Grease, High School Musical, and a little of Mama Mia. I'm a pretty fast learner, so the song I choose doesn't have to be in one of those. Thanks in advance for your help!
ANSWER: Go to your local music store or amazon.com and purchase The Singer's Musical Theatre Anthology (soprano) versions.
You may also find it at your library.
I highly recommend it as a valuable investment for anyone who is going to be doing musical theatre. I own all the soprano volumes myself.
Play around with the pieces in the anthology. Find something that suits your voice and that makes you feel confident. Practice!
It is hard to recommend a specific song without ever having heard you sing. I would check out the anthologies and find one there. Once you find something let me know what you pick and if you want audition tips.
Good luck!!

QUESTION: well i had actually thought of "In My Own Little Corner" from Cinderella. What do you think of that? And yeah, I understand that it would be hard to choose a song for someone without hearing them sing. But I found that song in the Singer's Musical Theatre Anthology that my chorus director owns! So YAY!
AnswerThe Cinderella piece sounds like a great one!
The most important thing in choosing an audition piece is to pick something that you feel comfortable and confident with. Something that you can get up there and show them your stuff and own the stage! You want to pick something where you can truly identify with the character and go into character. So if you are comfortable with In My Own Little Corner, practice practice and make it your own song!
