Acting in Plays, Singing/audition for SETC

Questionokay, my singable range is from F3 to C6. i've worked with some classical broadway (glitter and be gay, poor wand'ring one) and some belting broadway (wicked, la cage, little women). now i have an audition for SETC and i'm trying to find a song that shows off the range as well as the ability to move between classical and belting. i thought the perfect song would be the girl in 14G but i'm thinking it's probably going to be very over done. i have up to a minute to sing and i can only sing ONE song. any suggestions?? i was going to look at I Am What I Am from la cage aux follies and that song isnt as common but i dont know if it really shows a good range...
AnswerHi there Kristen...And thanks for writing.
From your range, it sounds like you are a soprano. So what I would do is listen to I Am What I Am and see if you cover anything around the F3 to the C6. If it doesn't, then I would listen to other songs at the library in the Soprano section to find one that does.
I'm not so much a proponent of matching people with songs. What I would rather do (because I have never heard you or nor have I seen what you can do as an actress) is encourage you to find a song that you really like and develop it. If you like the song and it shows your talent well and range well, then I would say you have a real winner if you practice hard and are ready to go. If you can't find a range optimal song, then I would just choose one that is a soprano song and that you like. Learn the melody first, then add the words, then put them together. After you have that sounding really good, then add the actions to tell the story of the song.
The most important thing you can do for an audition is do your best by being prepared and doing a song that you really like.
Does that help?
