Acting in Plays, Singing/Auditioning for a musical
Expert: Amandalynne - 11/24/2008
QuestionHullo!
My high school has a musical coming up -- copacabana. I am VERY interested in getting a part! But i am having a bit of trouble finding songs to audition. It must be upbeat and from a broadway musical.
Also, I don't know my exact range...
I am somewhere in the middle... I can't sing super high OR super low.
Also, I am a mediocre singer...not fantastic. So the song i pick can't be too hard...
Anyway, if you have any ideas, i would LOVE to hear them!
I have considered a bunch of songs so far, such as:
If i were a bell -- Guys and Dolls
I can hear the bells -- hairspray
i enjoy being a girl -- flower drum song.
i can easily hit the notes in all of these songs..
but especially "I can hear the bells", i thought it might be a little bit TOO easy...
anyway, thanks in advance!!

Go to your local music store or amazon.com and purchase The Singer's Musical Theatre Anthology..most likely the mezzo version.
You may also find it at your library.
I highly recommend it as a valuable investment for anyone who is going to be doing musical theatre. I own all the soprano volumes myself.
Play around with the pieces in the anthology. Find something that suits your voice and that makes you feel confident. Practice!
It is hard to recommend a specific song without ever having heard you sing. I would check out the anthologies and find one there. Once you find something let me know what you pick and if you want audition tips.
As far as difficulty of a piece, it is always better to sing a technically simple piece well than attempt a difficult piece and have errors. Sing something you feel confident with. You will sound better and if you feel confident it will help with the nerves.
Good luck!!
