Dear Sean:

I am 64 and once I had ambitions as a singer (Bass baritone or bass), but truthfully, after entering competitions and auditioning for parts it became obvious I wasn't that good.

I have had three teachers over different periods, maybe 15 years or more altogether. I have no teacher now but still practice daily and do small concerts for senior citizens and the like.

Recently, with no teacher, just practising, I have suddenly improved a great deal, my voice has really firmed up and become a lot freer. My comfortable range is from low G to high F. Lately though my low notes have improved to the point I can sing much lower, down to low C, but not that consistently.

Are there any exercises that specifically help in the lower range.

Thank you for the question.

My oldest client will be 82 this year.  He is a true bass-baritone and has been a faithful once-a-week client for more than a decade.  On his very best days, his range has always extended from Low E-flat to High A-flat.  Although I periodically have to yell at him about his weakness for nicotine, I can generally get a solid demonstration of scales ranging from Low F to High F.

Every musician knows it's all about scales.  Period.  Everyday, without fail, until you're so bored with it all you could scream.  In fact, you can scream better and easier if you do your scales every day.  Everything else is a leisurely walk in the park.

Never rehearse or learn new material on a cold voice.  As with a runner, you need a common sense period of stretching before taking off.  Otherwise, you invite injury.  Practice your scales from Low C to at least High F, i.e., a range of two octaves plus a major 4th.  Put in no less than 15 to 20 minutes every day and by the end of the week your friends and neighbors will start to notice the difference in whatever is pouring out of your mouth.

Experience

As a vocal coach, I work primarily with singers and actors throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. My students range from absolute beginners to working professionals, from pre-schoolers to senior citizens. The vast majority of my clients come to me through recommendation. I know how to identify any singer's vocal category, i.e., soprano, tenor, alto, baritone, etc. I know how to muscle-up every singer's vocal range and to expand it beyond conventional definitions. I have developed a vocal methodology for those who want to know how to belt, THE BELTER'S METHOD. As a singer who spent half of his career doing Bel Canto, I know that classical or Italian methodologies do not work in Standard American music. Bel Canto cannot be "adapted" to meet the needs of contemporary American music, including the demands of the Musical Theatre. There are a number of major components to my work as a vocal coach. The first is to identify the client's vocal category and to strengthen and maximize the vocal range accordingly. Then it's about teaching a reliable vocal workout that will enable the client to gain better control of their musicianship. That includes scale work to expand the vocal range and to improve placement, breath control, and diction. Then we work on material for the audition portfolio, the immediate job or assignment, a recording session, etc. My task to is to better equip singers and actors who are hoping to or relying upon their performance skills and vocal endurance to maintain a career in the Performing Arts.
