Acting in Plays, Singing/How late is too late?

Hello Mr. Martinfield,

I'm am hoping to enter college this fall as a musical theatre major, but am older than all the other freshmen, as I've been severely ill for the past 5 years. It looks like I may not be well enough by the start of the fall semester, and may have to wait until the spring semester, or possibly even next year. Considering that I'm entering the MT program at 23 - or 24 if I have to wait a year - would you say that it's too late to pursue musical theatre? I'm realistic enough to have my sights set on regional theatre, theme parks, and cruise lines, rather than being set on Broadway. If that plan doesn't pan out, I will likely end up teaching children's theatre during the year (which I would also enjoy) and doing summer stock. Yet with all these spritely BoCo- and CAP21-educated 22 year olds running about, do I even stand a chance at making a living (however meager it may be) acting, starting this late?

Ah, if only I had a crystal ball.

My last piece of advice to you would be to waste your academic career in musical theatre.  Your age not being the reason.  Dancing and singing skills can always be acquired outside academia.  Obviously, the process takes a great deal of energy, physical strength, and passion.  And money.

Save your money for the best school you can afford in an academic pursuit that is respected in the larger world.  Commit yourself to earning a Masters Degree and go after your teaching credentials.  I went to graduate school long after my initial studies in Theatre Arts.  I was as dedicated a student.

Something that may help you tremendously before making a final decision: the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) is one of the most frequently used personality tests to inform your vocational interests.  I took it twice during my graduate studies and the findings were identical.  It has influenced every choice I have made since then.  And all for the better.  The tests were arranged through the schools I attended.  Do some research about it and where you might be able to take it in your area.

Experience

As a vocal coach, I work primarily with singers and actors throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. My students range from absolute beginners to working professionals, from pre-schoolers to senior citizens. The vast majority of my clients come to me through recommendation. I know how to identify any singer's vocal category, i.e., soprano, tenor, alto, baritone, etc. I know how to muscle-up every singer's vocal range and to expand it beyond conventional definitions. I have developed a vocal methodology for those who want to know how to belt, THE BELTER'S METHOD. As a singer who spent half of his career doing Bel Canto, I know that classical or Italian methodologies do not work in Standard American music. Bel Canto cannot be "adapted" to meet the needs of contemporary American music, including the demands of the Musical Theatre. There are a number of major components to my work as a vocal coach. The first is to identify the client's vocal category and to strengthen and maximize the vocal range accordingly. Then it's about teaching a reliable vocal workout that will enable the client to gain better control of their musicianship. That includes scale work to expand the vocal range and to improve placement, breath control, and diction. Then we work on material for the audition portfolio, the immediate job or assignment, a recording session, etc. My task to is to better equip singers and actors who are hoping to or relying upon their performance skills and vocal endurance to maintain a career in the Performing Arts.
