Acting in Plays, Singing/range or tonal quality?

Hi,
I am doing a musical theatre course in college at the moment. In my group singing lessons, my singing teacher says I have a tenor voice and thus puts me in the tenor section of harmonies.

However, I don't have a tenor range. I have never had singing lessons and can sing to an F# above middle C and anything above that and I slip into falsetto. I can sing an F below low C which makes me think I have a bass range. Surely I cannot be a bass if my teacher thinks I have tenor qualities?

Maybe it is my technique that is wrong as i seem to slip into falsetto at the top end of a tenor passagio (if my research is correct). From what I have gathered, with professional singing lessons I will learn to sing in head voice instead of falsetto? Is this indeed the case? Or will I only ever be able to sing up until i break into falsetto?

Thank you for the question.

All my tenors sing to High D.  All my baritones sing to at least High A, some go higher.  All my bass-baritones sing to High G, some go higher.  And all the basses sing to High F.  No one slips into "falsetto".

What does that tell you?

Every voice-type is capable of developing a completely balanced range that spans at least two-octaves.  My job as a professional vocal coach is to correctly identify your vocal category and to train you accordingly.

Many well-intentioned instructors in college musical theatre classes have never sustained professional singing careers.  Many are not qualified to accurately determine a singer's true vocal category.  When they err in their assessments and then assign work that is not appropriate to you – the end results are not only frustrating to the singer, but whoever is in your audience (including other faculty members) will get the wrong impression about your true abilites.

If it is possible for you to link me to something you have recorded, I would be happy to listen to it.  In the meantime, your job is to pass the class – right?

Bottom line – if what you want to pursue is a career as singer, then you must become a better informed musician and expand your knowledge of repertoire.

Experience

As a vocal coach, I work primarily with singers and actors throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. My students range from absolute beginners to working professionals, from pre-schoolers to senior citizens. The vast majority of my clients come to me through recommendation. I know how to identify any singer's vocal category, i.e., soprano, tenor, alto, baritone, etc. I know how to muscle-up every singer's vocal range and to expand it beyond conventional definitions. I have developed a vocal methodology for those who want to know how to belt, THE BELTER'S METHOD. As a singer who spent half of his career doing Bel Canto, I know that classical or Italian methodologies do not work in Standard American music. Bel Canto cannot be "adapted" to meet the needs of contemporary American music, including the demands of the Musical Theatre. There are a number of major components to my work as a vocal coach. The first is to identify the client's vocal category and to strengthen and maximize the vocal range accordingly. Then it's about teaching a reliable vocal workout that will enable the client to gain better control of their musicianship. That includes scale work to expand the vocal range and to improve placement, breath control, and diction. Then we work on material for the audition portfolio, the immediate job or assignment, a recording session, etc. My task to is to better equip singers and actors who are hoping to or relying upon their performance skills and vocal endurance to maintain a career in the Performing Arts.
