Question
Hello,

I have an audition comming up in a month at my local community theatre. They ask for a headshotm, would it be ok if i went to to the photo studio at wal mart to get it done?
What size do i get the picture, and in color or black and white?

Thank you for answering.

Answer
Headshots can be a daunting issue, and there are a wide variety of opinions, not to mention sources.

The truth is that what you really need is something that is clearly representative of both you and your typical look.  It's perfectly valid to have a friend take a shot of you with a digital camera as well as having them professionally done, either by a professional specializing in headshots or by one specializing in portraits.

My suggestion would be to find the cheapest way to get your headshot, provided that you can be satisfied with their work.  Make sure that the photographer understands that you need 8x10 glossies, or see if they can put your resume on the matte side of the photos. (If not, staple it to the last page of your resume, facing opposite the other pages; in other words, they should be able to simply turn over your resume and see your face.)

With digital technology where it's at nowadays, and the advent of color laser printing being almost as good as traditional developed and printed film, the question of black and white versus color isn't all that critical.  Either will work; your resume should list certain physical qualities, such as eye and hair color, so black and white frequently works fine but color can be not too badly expensive.

I hope I've answered your question to your satisfaction.  Break a leg, and let me know how you do!

Expertise

Especially the Seattle theatre scene. Seattle is the number two theatre city of the nation, having more theatres than any other city (including Chicago!) except New York. I know the reputations of most of the local theatres, have worked with quite a number of them, and am currently earning the majority of my livelihood through live theatre. Beyond that, I have been a working professional for the past 10 years (after a long career in an unrelated field), have done just about everything in the field, and have done every possible type of theatre. Currently, I am also pursuing a new (and unexpected!) career as an animated film producer. (PLEASE NOTE that I am NOT an expert in music!) ***DO NOT*** ASK ME QUESTIONS REGARDING AUDITION SONGS OR MONOLOGUES - the answers require way too much information to be passed along by the All Experts system.

Experience

I have been an award-winning actor, singer, playwright, director and administrator (on various levels, all categories) for the past 30 years. A large part of my expertise has been with live theatre, although I do have a minor connection to filmed theater. I have done musicals, straight dramas, straight comedies, and experimental theatre.
