Acting in Plays, Singing/Song Repertoire
Expert: Sean Martinfield - 1/13/2009
QuestionI am a 15 year old mezzo/alto belter. The Musical Theatre roles that I have played that have best fit me are Martha in The Secret Garden and Annie Oakley in the revival of Annie Get Your Gun, which I'm currently in rehearsals for at my high school. I am trying to build my song repertoire and am having some trouble coming up with good uptempo songs that do not require an accent. I would also appreciate any ballad suggestions as well. Thank you so much for your help!
Erin
AnswerHi, Erin –
Thank you for the question.
I appreciate your comment about accents. Songs such as Martha's "If I Had A Fine White Horse" from THE SECRET GARDEN and Ado Annie's "I Cain't Say No" in OKLAHOMA require not only an accent, but may need a particular manner or "regionalism" which defines their social position and may point to other markers, i.e., economic status and level of education. When you audition for roles such as these you must indicate those qualities.
I want you to invest in the series of anthologies listed below. In them you will find Broadway ballads and up-tempos for your voice type: Mezzo-Soprano/Belter. The songs are in the same keys and arrangements as the Original Score:
Singer's Musical Theatre Anthology - Volume 1 Revised - Mezzo-Soprano/Belter

Singer's Musical Theatre Anthology - Volume 2 Revised - Mezzo-Soprano/Belter

Singer's Musical Theatre Anthology - Volume 2 Revised - Mezzo Soprano
Singer's Musical Theatre Anthology - Volume 3 - Mezzo-Soprano/Belter

Singer's Musical Theatre Anthology - Volume 4 - Mezzo-Soprano/Belter

Given the two roles you listed, consider any of the following songs:
When You Got It, Flaunt It – THE PRODUCERS
Roxie – CHICAGO
Another Hundred People – COMPANY
Gorgeous – THE APPLE TREE
He Wasn't You – ON A CLEAR DAY YOU CAN SEE FOREVER
I Can Cook Too – ON THE TOWN
