Acting in Plays, Singing/Can I learn to Sing?
Expert: Sean Martinfield - 1/8/2009
QuestionDear Sean,
I'm 15 and interested in Theater/Acting, however I can't really sing! I don't have good control over my voice. So my question is, can I learn to sing? I just want to learn so I can audition for musicals, I don't want to be a pop star, I just want to sound good!
-Thanks!
AnswerHey, Brad!
Thank you for the question.
Brad, my friend – everyone has to learn how to sing. You have to learn way-more than just some collection of tunes you crank out for an audition. Within less than 16 measures (or half a song) you have to convince the Producer (the guy with the money) and the Musical Director that you are a Musician. That translates to knowing what every other professional singer/musician knows. Guaranteed, your competition knows what it takes to get a job.
My job as a professional vocal coach is to identify your vocal category, i.e., tenor, baritone, bass, etc. Then it's about training you to endure 8-shows-a-week. Along the way you accumulate repertoire – both ballads and up-tempos that show off your vocal category and range. Come the right opportunity, you sing material that is related to but not from the show you are auditioning for. Your material must reflect the vocal demands of the character or ensemble position you want.
None of this happens overnight.
My client is playing the role of "Trina" in FALSETTOS at Theatre Rhinoceros here in San Francisco. The show opened last night. It's non-stop singing, just like an opera. The company rehearsed for only five weeks. Everyone in the cast is a professional musician with all the skills it takes to master a score in that short a period of time. These skills take time to accumulate.
