Question
I have a two-part question for you.  I have auditions for a show and for college theater programs.

I'm auditioning in January for Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, and I desperately want the role of Christine, the lead.  I want a song that shows optimism and my belt, which Christine is pretty big for.  I'm a mezzo/alto with a pretty good belt.  It has to be 32-bars, but they suggest we know the full song, so what do you think?

Also, I'm auditioning in December/January for a Musical Theater program, and I need two songs, no longer than 90 seconds each, a ballad and an uptempo, and they must contrast in time-period and style.  Again, I'm a mezzo/alto with a belt, so what do you recommend?

Thank you in advance for your help!

Answer
Hi there, Heather....And thanks for writing.

Would you mind telling me how you find me on the list?  What was it that drew you to ask me a question?  I am interested in some feedback.

Regarding your question, it's great that you know your range and that you know what it is that you want.  In addition, I commend you for knowing in detail what is required of you for the auditions.  You are paying attention to many of the key things that help an actor do well.

Regarding songs for both occasions, it would be unfair to you for me to suggest a song.  I do not know your voice nor do I know your experience.  I have not seen you embody a song before and therefore would not be able to place you in one.

So there are a few things I can suggest:
1.  Go to a voice or  a choir teacher and ask them if you could sing something for them.  Tell them your goal is to find a song and what you are looking for.  If they know you, you may not have to sing.  But go there with the idea that you are looking for help in finding a song.  Ask them for their suggestions to come from musicals for mezzo/altos.  Choose from this exercise the songs that you really like and only do the one that really resonates with you - you understand and you can relate to as well as really like.  Then rehearse and prepare that one.

2.  Go to your local library.  Usually musicals are filed in sections using the range.  Look for mezzo/alto musicals and listen to them in the library to find songs.  Again, listen for the words and the music that you like.  Choose songs that you can relate to and understand and get into.  Then prepare them.

Does this help?

Wanda
