Acting in Plays, Singing/Floyd Collins Audition
Expert: Sean Martinfield - 10/17/2009
QuestionI am currently getting ready for an audition for Floyd Collins. I am a high tenor and looking for a piece similar to the show that will show that in the song. I have thought of Take a Chance on Me from Little Women, Lost in the WIlderness from Children of Eden, and Hero and Leander from Myths and Hymns. Do you have any suggestions for a piece that would be best for this audition??????? THANKS!
AnswerHi, Scott –
Thank you for the question.
I think the songs you have suggested are fine. You may also want to consider:
Someone Is Waiting – COMPANY
The Only Home I Know – SHENANDOAH
Come To Me, Bend To Me – BRIGADOON
Whatever you choose to sing, you must project the simplicity and humbleness of the brave man from Kentucky. Bear in mind there must be a suggestion of the accent. Be sure to study the Original Cast recording to understand the atmosphere you must convey.
If you have the option, sing a Traditional folk song. For example, songs by Stephen Foster such as “Maggie By My Side” and “Jeannie With The Light Brown Hair” set at a moderate ballad tempo and placed in the keys that show off your tenor range will solicit empathy with the character fatally trapped in a mine.
