Question
Hello,
In January i have an open audition for a community theater's production of Guys and Doll's Junior. I can hold a pitch and have had many lead roles in the past that have solo songs along with duets. I haven't sung in a production in a long time and i'm auditioning for the character of Adelaide. I am strong with my acting and have good comedic timing. How should I prepare my voice for my audition? What song should I sing? I'm flustered and nervous already! Please help!

Thank you,
Jane

Answer
Hey there, Jane...And thanks for writing.

Congrats on your audition!  That is great.

Preparing your voice for auditioning will require warm ups (like humming and scales) and breathing exercises first.  And then rehearsing your song.  These exercises together should prepare you sufficiently.

Regarding what you sing...why not pick one of the solo songs or duets you have done in the past?  Pick one that you love and that you understand.  Rehearse the music and words first and then add your body and the expression of the song to it.  And you should be ready to go.

Does that help you at all?
