Question
I am auditioning for Sound of Music. I am a soprano. I was thinking of singing something from Wicked like Popular or I'm not that girl. Please help me find a song. Thanks

Answer
Hi there, Chelsea.  Congratulations on the audition.  I hope it goes very well for you :).

The best advice I can give for songs for auditions is to choose something you like, something you can relate to, and something that is within your range and will show what you can do.

It sounds like you like these 2 songs.  Which one can you relate to best?   Choose that one.

Can you go out to the library and listen to the tracks and sign out the music?  That really is the best way to do this.  Sign it out.  Then, at home, learn the piece in parts - first the melody - be sure you have that cold first.  Then the words - add the words to the melody.  Then the performance - add the actions or the telling of the story of the song to the melody and the words.

Without knowing you personally and without knowing your experience, it is difficult for me to give you any further advice.  However, I find that if the person likes the song they are doing and can relate to it and it is not beyond their ability, that they can do a good job of auditioning.

Does that help you at all?
