Acting in Plays, Singing/Audition Songs
Expert: Sean Martinfield - 3/31/2009
QuestionHello. I'm preparing to audition for Seussical in mid-May. I am auditioning for
the roles of Gertrude (preferably) and/or Mayzie. I haven't auditioned too much
in the past couple years and I don't want to sing anything too popular and
overdone. Please help! :D
AnswerHello, Chelsea –
Thank you for the question.
Whenever possible it's always a good idea to sing another song (not from the show) by the same composer.
I want you to get this anthology of songs by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty. Click on or paste the URL into your browser to order on-line:
THE AHRENS & FLAHERTY SONGBOOK

Also consider:
I'm Late – ALICE IN WONDERLAND
I Won't Grow Up – PETER PAN
Candy Man – WILLY WONKA AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY
What you need to consider is that "Gertrude" is a soprano and "Mayzie" is a mezzo. Whatever songs you choose, set them in the key that reflects the range of the character (or ensemble position) you most want. If you are seeking a role, sing your material in relationship to the character. At some point, do a gesture and vocal mannerism that suggests the character.
