Acting in Plays, Singing/Adelaide's Lament
Expert: Sean Martinfield - 4/19/2009
QuestionI am a dancer who sings and I am currently preparing for my first audition with a major theater group, and right now the piece that is troubling me is finding sheet music. I learn music by ear, so have been practicing Adelaide's Lament with the Vivian Blaine recording - my question is, how do I find out what key that is in? I am currently attempting to purchase the correct sheet music for the audition, and cannot seem to determine what key the original score had for this song.
AnswerHello, Sarah –
Thank you for the question.
"Adelaide's Lament" begins in the key of C and modulates at "In other words".
I want you to order the following anthology. Click on or paste the URL into your browser to order on-line:
Singer's Musical Theatre Anthology - Volume 2 Revised - Mezzo-Soprano/Belter
http://www.sheetmusicplus.com/store/smp_detail.html?cart=32001285122&lc=recs:det...
The song is included in the anthology and is published in the original key. The same is true for every song in the anthology, as well as the other three volumes. If you are a mezzo-soprano and perhaps one with a solid belt, then you will want to invest in this series.
My job as a professional vocal coach is to point out to you that you must learn to read music. It's nothing. With the most fundamental of instruction you should be able to determine the key of any song you hear. Be sure you know all of Adelaide's material prior to the audition. Guaranteed, your competition already does.
