Question
I was recently asked by the music director of a professional theatre company to audition for their summer season, which consists of High School Musical and Annie. I am 18 years old, but 4'11" and 98 lbs so I am frequently called upon to play children's roles.  The music director told me that I would be considered for any of the roles in High School Musical and for Annie or any of the orphans.  My only concern is that I am finding it difficult to find one song that could be applicable to both HSM and Annie.  I have a youthful mezzo soprano voice with a big belt and previous roles include Little Red in Into the Woods, Amy in Little Women, and Mary Lennox in Secret Garden.  

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for the question.

You are going to be intriguing no matter what you sing.  It helps when the Director invites you to audition.  All you need to do is prove him right.

Consider any of the following songs from the musical, BEEHIVE.  As with other "jukebox musicals", such as JERSEY BOYS, MAMMA MIA, etc., BEEHIVE appropriates songs from the '50s and '60s sung by the hottest Girl Groups and Soloists and threads them together with a plot.

Consider any of the following:
"You Don't Own Me"   (Leslie Gore)
"Judy's Turn To Cry"   (Leslie Gore)
"Where The Boys Are"    (Connie Francis)
"Don't Sleep In The Subway"   (Petula Clark)
"You Don't Have To Say You Love Me"  (Dusty Springfield)
"It's My Party"  (Leslie Gore)

Many of these songs are available as digital downloads or in Pop Anthologies from the period.  Adjust the key if you need to.  The rest is about you singing like the best Pop Star on the block.

I am a professional vocal coach in San Francisco. I have 24 years of experience as Personal Trainer to singers and actors in the San Francisco Bay Area. I sang professionally for 20 years and know what it means to live the life of a musician. Experience

As a vocal coach, I work primarily with singers and actors throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. My students range from absolute beginners to working professionals, from pre-schoolers to senior citizens. The vast majority of my clients come to me through recommendation. I know how to identify any singer's vocal category, i.e., soprano, tenor, alto, baritone, etc. I know how to muscle-up every singer's vocal range and to expand it beyond conventional definitions. I have developed a vocal methodology for those who want to know how to belt, THE BELTER'S METHOD. As a singer who spent half of his career doing Bel Canto, I know that classical or Italian methodologies do not work in Standard American music. Bel Canto cannot be "adapted" to meet the needs of contemporary American music, including the demands of the Musical Theatre. There are a number of major components to my work as a vocal coach. The first is to identify the client's vocal category and to strengthen and maximize the vocal range accordingly. Then it's about teaching a reliable vocal workout that will enable the client to gain better control of their musicianship. That includes scale work to expand the vocal range and to improve placement, breath control, and diction. Then we work on material for the audition portfolio, the immediate job or assignment, a recording session, etc. My task to is to better equip singers and actors who are hoping to or relying upon their performance skills and vocal endurance to maintain a career in the Performing Arts.
