Acting in Plays, Singing/Mimi from RENT
Expert: Wanda Reinholdt - 4/30/2009
QuestionI'm about to audition for RENT at my local theater, and I had a question.
I'm in a great physical shape to play Mimi, and I know I can sing it quite well;
but I've got very dark hair and VERY pale skin.
All the Mimis I've ever seen on, or off broadway have been these cute little
chicks with dark skin and curly dark hair.
Do you think my race keep me from getting this role?
AnswerHi there, Ella...And thanks for writing.
When it comes to getting a role, it is important that you audition for whatever you are interested in and just let the Directors decide where you fit. I've seen it happen where a person that is not typically cast in a certain role gets it because they have a little something special that will make the character unique and interesting. I've also seen the typical person cast over and over.
Directors needs to take into consideration a lot of things - from what the person looks like with the rest of the people in the cast to schedule to ability to character to talent.
It is possible that your race will keep you from getting the role. On the other hand, you may be exactly what they are looking for. Or you may get a different role. You have no control over what you get. But you do have control over how well you do in the audition. Never say no for a role that you could morally take on. Just go and audition and do your best.
Savvy? Does that help you?
