Acting in Plays, Singing/One-Person Show

Question
Hey!
I'm really interested in creating a one-man show, but wanted to know how I should do it? Is it the same as a stand-up comedy gig?

Answer
No, a one-man show is not the same as stand up comedy.  While many solo performances have been closely tied to stand up, they are two different things.

The advice I have been given about developing a solo show is to write about what you know.  If people love listening to you tell stories, or you have had experiences that you think are unique, or if you believe you have a unique way of talking about every day things, focus on that.

Find out how to reach people who do solo shows.  A couple of names you should know - Mike Daisy, Josh Kornbluth.  Both have had successful solo shows and are constantly working in this area.  The late Spalding Gray has long been considered the master - read some of his stuff.
