Acting in Plays, Singing/show choir auditions

Question
I'm a 16 year old soprano. My school is holding auditions for our show choir. For the auditions, we're required to sing 1 minute of a broadway tune and 1 minute of a non-show tune. One of those must be a ballad, and the other needs to be uptempo. I want to do something that will show off my voice, but isn't overdone or clichéd.

Answer
Hi there, Carrie...And thanks for writing.

Because I do not know you personally nor have I seen you perform, the best that I can do is encourage you to go to the library and listen to soprano songs.  It takes time but by doing this you can learn what songs are out there and you can find one that shows off your voice while at the same time is balanced and something that you can relate to.

If you have songs that you are interested in doing already, why not listen to them at the library first and then go from there.  Sometimes your instinct can be a good one.

Remember though to pick songs that show the best part of you and songs that you can relate to.  Otherwise, when you are performing, the performance will be flat and uninteresting.

Does that help you?
