Acting in Plays, Singing/suggestions as to selection of a song!
Expert: Sean Martinfield - 4/28/2009
QuestionHello Mr. Martinfield! This is Kay, coming to you all the
way from India! I'm planning to audition for the musical
'Breaking Up Is Hard To Do'(a musical compilation of 17 of
Neil Sedaka's songs) which is to be staged here in about
three months. Audition are in a week's time! The two female
roles that are available for people of my age group(i'm 18)
are that of Marge(the lead) and Lois(Marge's best friend).
And while i'd probably be more suited to Lois's part, i
plan to audition the role of Marge instead. Would you
please suggest a couple of songs that i could sing, that
would set the Marge-mood at my audition? As its a
relatively new musical, i'm not very sure of the plot or
character sketches. i haven't had any formal vocal
training, but i'm comfortable singing most soprano parts.
Thank you so much for your help!
AnswerHello, Kay –
Thank you for the question.
Neil Sedaka's BREAKING UP IS HARD TO DO is a "juke box musical", i.e., one that is comprised of previously released pop songs from any era and held together by a thin line of plot.
Consider any of these "girl songs" that were popular at the same time as Mr. Sedaka's music:
Chains
Dancing In The Street
Dedicated To The One I Love
Don't Say Nothin' Bad About My Baby
Don't Sleep In The Subway
He's A Rebel
He's Sure The Boy I Love
Judy's Turn To Cry
The Big Hurt
The End Of The World
