Hi there,
First I want to say I've loved reading your advice to others, it has really helped me in past auditions. So thanks!
Now on to my question. My local theatre group is doing Guys and Dolls and I want to audition for the part of Adelaide (what girl doesn't love that part). I've decided to audition with the song "I Wanna Be Loved By You" but I'm not sure how I should deliver it when I audition. I've been practicing it in both a sultry way and a more "character" way, and have fun doing it both ways. The problem is for the audition I'm just not sure wheather I should do it a la Marilyn Monroe in "Some like it Hot" or like Helen Kane in "Three Little Words". What would you recommend?

Oh PS. Do you know of any monologues that would work well for Auditioning for Adelaide? We are given the option to prepare one or do a cold read and I'm not having much luck finding a good one.

Hi, Jackie –

Thank you for the question.  Choosing monologues is not within my expertise.  As a professional vocal coach, I will work with you on the presentation of the one you choose.

The role of “Adelaide” in GUYS AND DOLLS was originated by Vivian Blaine.  In the Original Broadway Cast album you will hear not only her New York accent, but primarily the voice of a hot “doll”.  After all, she must have something going on to be in a major nightclub and the steady girlfriend of a guy in the mob.

You must assume there’s going to be a line of girls wrapped around the block who want the role of “Adelaide”.  What you need to do is prove your own vocal chops – not imitate someone else’s.

“I Wanna Be Loved By You” is a perfect audition song.  You must sing it as though it were a number from the show.

Experience

As a vocal coach, I work primarily with singers and actors throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. My students range from absolute beginners to working professionals, from pre-schoolers to senior citizens. The vast majority of my clients come to me through recommendation. I know how to identify any singer's vocal category, i.e., soprano, tenor, alto, baritone, etc. I know how to muscle-up every singer's vocal range and to expand it beyond conventional definitions. I have developed a vocal methodology for those who want to know how to belt, THE BELTER'S METHOD. As a singer who spent half of his career doing Bel Canto, I know that classical or Italian methodologies do not work in Standard American music. Bel Canto cannot be "adapted" to meet the needs of contemporary American music, including the demands of the Musical Theatre. There are a number of major components to my work as a vocal coach. The first is to identify the client's vocal category and to strengthen and maximize the vocal range accordingly. Then it's about teaching a reliable vocal workout that will enable the client to gain better control of their musicianship. That includes scale work to expand the vocal range and to improve placement, breath control, and diction. Then we work on material for the audition portfolio, the immediate job or assignment, a recording session, etc. My task to is to better equip singers and actors who are hoping to or relying upon their performance skills and vocal endurance to maintain a career in the Performing Arts.
