Question
I have been out of theatre for about 6 years now and haven't had any formal vocal training either in several years. Due to a recent layoff at work, and more time on my hands I want to audition for a part in the musical Chicago at a local theatre.  Though I don't have much dance experience, I have a lot of past vocal experience, and can pick up on what a director wants quickly.  Should I try to audition for a lead role?  If so, how do I execute my audition to impress the directors?  Also, which songs would you suggest for a soprano, I used to be considered a first soprano, but now I would think I've gotten a little more towards second soprano.  I also would like to know what suggestions you may have for preparing for the role.  The audition is on June 1st.  I don't have much time. Thank you for the question.

If you were auditioning for a Broadway Revival or National Tour of CHICAGO, then your resumé would need to include experience and training in the Fosse dance style.  That may not be true with your local company.  Nevertheless, you will still be auditioning against others who probably have recent dancing experience and/or keep up with their classes.

Then it’s about your vocal chops.  All my sopranos – whether singing as First or Second – exercise to at least High C, most go higher.  All my mezzo-sopranos exercise from at least Low G to High A, most sing at least a whole step beyond either point. “Mary Sunshine” is the one lead role in CHICAGO for a soprano – depending on the company. She sings "A little bit of good".  Ideally, it is performed by a countertenor. If one doesn’t show up, then consider any of the following songs for your audition:

Falling In Love With Love – THE BOYS FROM A SYRACUSE
Look For A Sky Of Blue – LITTLE MARY SUNSHINE
Show Me – MY FAIR LADY
A Lovely Night – CINDERELLA
A Call From The Vatican – NINE

If you want to be considered for the Ensemble, which would include “The Cell Block Tango”, then go to the songs of the composing team, Kander and Ebb.  Some of them may be available on-line in a digital format that can be transposed should you need to do that.  Check out their songs from AND THE WORLD GOES ‘ROUND.  Also consider “Big Spender” from Cy Coleman’s SWEET CHARITY.

Experience

As a vocal coach, I work primarily with singers and actors throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. My students range from absolute beginners to working professionals, from pre-schoolers to senior citizens. The vast majority of my clients come to me through recommendation. I know how to identify any singer's vocal category, i.e., soprano, tenor, alto, baritone, etc. I know how to muscle-up every singer's vocal range and to expand it beyond conventional definitions. I have developed a vocal methodology for those who want to know how to belt, THE BELTER'S METHOD. As a singer who spent half of his career doing Bel Canto, I know that classical or Italian methodologies do not work in Standard American music. Bel Canto cannot be "adapted" to meet the needs of contemporary American music, including the demands of the Musical Theatre. There are a number of major components to my work as a vocal coach. The first is to identify the client's vocal category and to strengthen and maximize the vocal range accordingly. Then it's about teaching a reliable vocal workout that will enable the client to gain better control of their musicianship. That includes scale work to expand the vocal range and to improve placement, breath control, and diction. Then we work on material for the audition portfolio, the immediate job or assignment, a recording session, etc. My task to is to better equip singers and actors who are hoping to or relying upon their performance skills and vocal endurance to maintain a career in the Performing Arts.
