Question
While studying at the MC Arts High School for Broadway singing, I started to learn how to belt properly without straining my vocal chords. Every now and then I still strain them, and I also have problems with volume for low notes. Is there anything I can do to increase volume and/or practice belting 'safely'?

Thank you for the question.

There is a difference between belting and having a strong vocal range.  Belting happens within certain passages of a song.

The first thing I consider as a professional vocal coach is your vocal category.  This is what you do not mention.  What is your actual range?

It very often happens in high school situations that the student’s vocal category is not correctly identified or may be ignored altogether. Let’s assume you are a standard Broadway-type alto.  That means no less a range than Low A to 3rd-space C#.  All my altos cover at least the two-octave stretch between Low F and High F.  That happens through a vocal workout consisting of a series of complex scales.

Belting without straining happens in conjunction with your vocal range being totally balanced.  You must exercise your entire range before your learn or review your material.  That is the most common problem for singers feeling strain and tension.  But again, the solutions to the problem start with your vocal category being correctly identified.  Ultimately that is proven through consistent public performance of material written specifically for that category.

It may be possible that your voice is capable of a higher range than what you have explored or was within the ability of whoever you were working with to teach you.  That alone could account for your lack of volume on the specific notes in what you identify as your lower range.

Experience

As a vocal coach, I work primarily with singers and actors throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. My students range from absolute beginners to working professionals, from pre-schoolers to senior citizens. The vast majority of my clients come to me through recommendation. I know how to identify any singer's vocal category, i.e., soprano, tenor, alto, baritone, etc. I know how to muscle-up every singer's vocal range and to expand it beyond conventional definitions. I have developed a vocal methodology for those who want to know how to belt, THE BELTER'S METHOD. As a singer who spent half of his career doing Bel Canto, I know that classical or Italian methodologies do not work in Standard American music. Bel Canto cannot be "adapted" to meet the needs of contemporary American music, including the demands of the Musical Theatre. There are a number of major components to my work as a vocal coach. The first is to identify the client's vocal category and to strengthen and maximize the vocal range accordingly. Then it's about teaching a reliable vocal workout that will enable the client to gain better control of their musicianship. That includes scale work to expand the vocal range and to improve placement, breath control, and diction. Then we work on material for the audition portfolio, the immediate job or assignment, a recording session, etc. My task to is to better equip singers and actors who are hoping to or relying upon their performance skills and vocal endurance to maintain a career in the Performing Arts.
