Acting in Plays, Singing/audition tips, nerve control tips

QuestionI'm having an audition for two shows- A Midsummer Nights Dream, and
Equus. I'm really hoping for a role, especially for the Shakespeare play. I was
wondering if you might have any advice on giving the best audition with a
cold reading that you have maybe 5-10 minutes to prepare. I have major
trouble giving the best possible audition with cold readings. I also have a lot
of trouble with nerves and fear. I was wondering if you might have tips on
how to stay calm and focused, and control nervousness at an audition. Also,
any specific tips you might have for auditioning for either one of those plays.
Thank you so much for you time and help.
AnswerHi there, Molly. Thanks for writing.
First of all, congrats on signing up for your auditions. THAT is a huge step in itself. Putting yourself in the position to prepare for the auditions is wonderful. So great job.
I would say that if you first could look at how you are thinking about this - your mindset - that that would be a great place to start. What are the words and the descriptive phrases that you are using in your mind to describe the auditioning process? What are some things you could think about that would help you to focus on the positives?
And how do you go into auditions? Are you warmed up (body, mind, voice) and relaxed? Look at something here as well.
In addition, how often do you just grab something and read it? Practice is the best help for cold readings.
Does that help you?
