Acting in Plays, Singing/Musical Theatre Audition
Expert: Sean Martinfield - 1/23/2010
QuestionI am trying out for my high school's musical production of Annie. it is the complete broadway version. I really want the role of Mr. Warbucks but I am concerned about my song choice for the vocal audition. I have a large vocal range. I am usually a tenor (I can go up to a G) but can also hit baritone notes. I was going to sing the song BRING HIM HOME from Les Mis, but am concerned it does not show off enough vocal range for the part of Mr. Warbucks. I asked the director about it, and she said that she couldn't give me any more help than the next person, and just gave me the advice "choose a song with range." I know that in the musical, Mr. Warbucks's range is C-high F. Do you have any song suggestions for me?
Thank you so much!
-Nic
AnswerHi, Nic –
Thank you for the question.
Don’t sing “Bring Him Home”. It’s the wrong kind of voice and song for Daddy Warbucks.
Consider any of the following:
Come with me – THE BOYS FROM SYRACUSE
On the street where you live – MY FAIR LADY (transpose up to D-flat or D major)
Someone like you – DO I HEAR A WALTZ
Almost like being in love – BRIGADOON
Make sure you know all of Warbucks’ music and dialogue prior to the audition. Assuming you are right for the role, your job is to prove your tenor vocal chops.
